To the west is Baby Head Mountain, with its peak 250 feet above the townsite. To the east is Baby Head Creek. At the center is a cemetery, the most prominent remnants of a ghost town with a controversial founding story that only had a post office from 1879 to 1918.
Depending on who you talk to, you’ll hear a variation of 1 of 3 founding stories. For starters, some say that in the 1850s, a small child had been kidnapped and then killed by indigenous people. The small child’s remains then were left on the mountain as a warning.
Others claim that in the 1870s, a group of landowners kidnapped then killed a child to blame it on the indigenous people as an appeal for support from the US Calvary and a way to scare off incoming homesteaders.
The most logical founding story centers around Baby Head Creek, having been named for the smaller of 2 heads on the nearby creek, and the locals named the community for the creek.
